Chapter 35
Chapter 35:.
Helen entered the office with some documents in her hands, and when she saw Dolores, a hint of brutality crossed her eyes.
Was this woman trying to seduce Matthew while she was away?
Matthew was hers-Dolores should never enter this area!
He wanted so badly to slap Dolores.
However, at that moment, Matthew spoke up instead. “What is it?”
“I need your signature on this document,” Helen hid the brutality immediately, forcing a smile as she answered him.
She picked up the documents and began flipping through them. She paused to ask Dolores to leave. “We don’t need you here right now. You can leave us now.”
Dolores gave him a small nod before leaving his office.
“Matthew, she…”
“I’ve asked her to translate something for me. Is there a problem with that?” His face didn’t flinch as he interrupted her.
There was no trace of him lying as he looked at her face. He was secretly taking responsibility for what had happened to Dolores recently. He was well aware of Helen’s unfriendly attitude towards Dolores, but there was nothing he could do to change the situation.
She had some responsibility when it came to Helen.
“No, nothing.” Helen reached over and began to massage her. “You can leave that stuff to me in the future.”
Matthew merely mumbled a reply.
After leaving work, Dolores was standing by the road next to the building. She saw a black car slowly pull out of the garage and unconsciously straightened her back. She knew the identity of the person in the driver’s seat.
The black car stopped in front of her. Abbott was not with Matthew, so he was driving himself. The window rolled down and Matthew’s calm gaze appeared.
Dolores was wearing a red dress with a flat collar. Her waist was accentuated and the dress came to just below her knees. Her pale legs were exposed to the slightly cool night air.
Feeling his smoldering stare, Dolores hastened to explain. “I didn’t want to dress too casually and embarrass you. After all, I’m still your ‘wife’. ” She was deliberately giving the explanation because she feared that
Randolph would discover her lies and realize that they did not love each other.
During the afternoon break, Dolores had returned specifically to the villa and had picked out the particular dress. She had never worn it. It had been given to her by Sampson on her eighteenth birthday.
Dolores had always been fair-skinned and the bright red dress managed to bring out the contours of her skin even more. Her collarbones were sculpted and her neck was free of excess fat. She exuded charm.
She was a sight to behold.
A faint gleam appeared in Matthew’s eyes and he said sweetly, “Get in the car.”
She sat in the passenger seat as she thought about what was going to happen next. Since they were going back to the Flores Family home, she had to put on her best performance.
Matthew was strangely too quiet and Dolores couldn’t guess what was on his mind.
Could it be that his attire was inappropriate? She rarely wore anything that stood out like the bright red dress. Then, Sampson had commented that it suited her very well.
As the scenery passed by the window, shadows moved ambiguously across Matthew’s handsome face. He looked like someone who existed only in a dream.
It felt unreal and distant, just like their relationship; so close, yet so far away.
After deliberating for a while, she voiced her concern. “My dress isn’t up to your standards?”
Matthew’s knuckles went white as he gripped the steering wheel, but his fingers lifted slightly. He shot her a look and spoke. “You’re fine.”
Dolores relaxed the tension in her body slightly, unwilling to continue the conversation.
Neither spoke for a while and a blanket of oppressive silence hung in the air of the car.
Dolores’ gaze roamed over her hands gripping the steering wheel. Her fingers were long and chiseled. Her nails were immaculate. It was another sight to behold. Her fingers had the same impact on others as her face. It was an unforgettable sight.
“They look that good?” his gaze was still fixed on the road.
After hearing what he said, Dolores only then realized that she had been looking at him for some time. She instantly shifted her gaze elsewhere and pretended not to hear him.
Matthew looked at her slowly with lips curved in a devious smile. “Is my face prettier than my fingers?”
Dolores continued to pretend not to hear him and even pretended to fall asleep.
She was criticizing him furiously in her heart-where had his aloofness and nobility gone?
Why did he suddenly seem like a narcissist?
After about twenty minutes, the car pulled up in front of the Flores Family villa.
Randolph had arrived home earlier than usual and Beulah had been busy preparing the dishes for dinner. The scale and quality of the food was very acceptable, in Randolph’s opinion. He seemed to have forgotten for the moment his earlier unhappy altercation.
“The First Miss is at home,” the maid came to announce.
Randolph looked at Beulah and Annabelle as he warned them in a low tone. “This is a very important test for me. Don’t do anything that might ruin this meeting.”
Beulah suppressed the anger in her heart as she straightened her suit. “You have nothing to worry about. We will never talk back to her or retaliate, even if she lunges at us in anger. As long as she lends you a hand in company affairs, I can continue to do all this for you, considering that I can’t be of any help in the company. So you can vent your anger all you want.”
Randolph felt that Beulah did not waste her feelings for her in the past. “When the crisis at the company has been resolved, I will kindly make it up to you.”
Once Beulah gave her okay, Randolph headed for the door, wanting to welcome Dolores and Matthew personally.
Dolores was standing next to Matthew, holding the contract regarding the land at Repulse Bay.
Matthew looked at her and held out his arm. “Take my arm.” Dolores followed him and together they entered the villa.
“Please, please come in. It is an honor that you can join us for dinner tonight.” Randolph welcomed them with open arms.
He did not behave as his usual arrogant and entitled self. Instead, he was gracious and flattering.
Matthew never had good feelings toward Randolph, so he merely nodded slightly while keeping his mouth shut and his indifference.
Randolph froze a little when he realized that Matthew wasn’t going to joke with him and ease the tension in the air. He had expected Matthew to have a different attitude, seeing that Randolph was Dolores’ father and father-in-law.
He realized he was rapidly losing face and had to do something about it.
Dolores simply laughed, “He’s always like that.”
Randolph managed to perk up his expression as he invited them in. “Come in now.”
Beulah was playing the part of a decent wife and mother. They watched her arrange the silverware on the table. At the sight of her guests, she flashed an insincere smile. “At last you are here. Come and sit down. Lola, you would never have thought that your father asked me to prepare a delicious meal after learning you were coming for dinner today. I hope the meal is enjoyable for you.”
Dolores looked at her with a smile on her face. They were just acting at that moment.
“I’m not an outsider, no need to be formal.”
As she replied, she squeezed Matthew’s arm tighter. She was only doing it for show.
Beulah studied Dolores’ appearance as she struggled to suppress the resentment in her heart. She continued with her false façade.
“Indeed, you are right.”
Dolores settled back in her seat, still clinging to Matthew’s arm. Beulah and Annabelle sat across from them.
Annabelle had put on a red dress and delicate makeup. Despite being so young, she looked mature and flirtatious at the moment. Dolores gave Annabelle a disdainful glance and laughed coldly to herself – was Annabelle trying to seduce Matthew?
As she looked at Annabelle’s fixed expression, she quipped. “Sis, why are you looking at your brother-in-law like that, is there something on his face?” Matthew’s eyes twitched slightly as he pondered Dolores’ intentions.
He wasn’t interested in looking at such a made-up face, and although they were both wearing a red dress, Dolores, who was lightly made-up, looked infinitely better than her sister. She was a sight to behold at the dining room table.
Annabelle immediately lowered her head. Beulah was holding Annabelle’s hands under the table. She was trying to calm Annabelle down.
“All right, we’re nowhere near the food anymore; I’m sure they’re hungry.”
Randolph was finding an opportunity to start a conversation with Matthew, but he couldn’t seem to settle on a suitable topic. From the moment Matthew set foot in the villa, he seemed to be trying to have nothing to do with any of the Flores.
Occasionally, he would pick up some food and place it on Dolores’ plate in a show of affection.
Randolph watched their interactions in silence. He hadn’t expected his daughter, who had never caught his attention, to be the apple of Matthew Nelson’s eye.
He couldn’t help but change his mind about Dolores.
Dolores had never intended to dine only with her family.noveldrama
She placed the contract on the table and raised her voice. “This is what you always wanted. Since I brought this here, you haven’t forgotten your promise, have you?”
Since it wasn’t easy for her to get Matthew’s support in the matter, she had to seize the opportunity and take back what belonged to her and her mother.
The smile on Randolph’s face slowly faded. “We’re still family in the end. Just tell me directly if you have any favors to ask of me.”
His priority was to solve his company’s crisis. He wouldn’t have much use for the piece of land at the moment.
He was hinting at Dolores forcefully as he blinked several times to initiate the topic in front of Matthew, but Dolores pretended not to understand him as she asked with concern, “Is something wrong with your eyes?”
If Matthew hadn’t been there, Randolph would have jumped up and down in fury. Matthew looked at Dolores once more and realized that she was feigning ignorance, even though she knew what she had to do. It made her look smart….
No, actually it made her look adorable.
Beulah interrupted them in an attempt to clear things up.
She spoke as she put some food on Dolores’ plate. “Lola, your father’s company is having some problems right now…” As she began, she focused her gaze on Matthew, “Matthew is our son-in-law and we need your help this time. If I have offended you in the past, I hope you can let it go for now.”
Dolores’ face darkened at the mention of Matthew as her son-in-law. They really knew how to reap all the prestige for themselves.
“Did you give me life, or did you raise me?” asked Dolores, stepping closer to Matthew as she looked at him. “Since when did my husband suddenly become your son-in-law?”
Beulah clenched her hand into fists under the table, but was still able to keep her smile. “I know you’re still angry about your father and me, but we really love each other…”.
“Today I come to take back what is rightfully mine!” Dolores didn’t give Beulah a chance to finish her sentence.
Had Beulah just said they were in love? Dolores wanted to see for herself what choice Randolph would make when presented with the benefits and love.
Randolph realized that the mood had soured and there was no longer any way to have a proper conversation.
He stood up and turned to Dolores. “Let’s continue this conversation in the other room.”
Dolores stood up and looked at Matthew. “I’ll be back in a little while.”
Matthew mumbled a weak reply. Dolores followed Randolph into his study.
As soon as they were alone, Randolph immediately changed his expression to one of cruelty. “Have you told Matthew my problem?”
Dolores merely looked at Randolph with no emotion on her face. It seemed she had grown accustomed to being hurt, so she could no longer be moved by anything.
“Give me back what belongs to me first.” It was a rare opportunity for her.
She had to get her things back first.
Randolph stared at her and replied. “I’ll give them back to you, but you have to make sure Matthew will help my company in this crisis.”
“Our deal last time only covered the land and my things. The matter of your company has nothing to do with it. I’ve mentioned it before. If you want me to convince Matthew to help you, divorce Beulah. If you do, only then will I help you.” Dolores paused before continuing. “You can see for yourself that Matthew loves me very much. He would immediately agree to help you if I am the one to bring it up.”
Randolph sank into a deep silence upon hearing that.
Dolores continued. “You have to consider which is more important to you: your company or your wife, who can’t even give you a child.” Dolores turned and prepared to leave the study. At the last second, Randolph responded. “I agree to your terms.” Dolores smiled to herself. Just as she expected…
Dolores stopped dead in her tracks and turned to look at him. “I want my things back today.”
She didn’t want it to drag on, fearing things would take a turn for the worse. It didn’t matter that she couldn’t get everything back for the time being, but she could get things like money together for now. His mother’s medical bills were going to come due soon.
Randolph ground his teeth: “Lola, remember we’re still a family.”
Dolores smiled in response. “I know, but what belongs to me and my mother has always belonged to us – shouldn’t you give it back no matter what?”
Were they a family? She finally remembered that they were a family only when it suited her .
